Kerri Howell is an adjunct professor of public relations in the Newhouse School.  She received her Bachelor’s in communications from SUNY Geneseo and her Master’s in communications management from Syracuse University.  Howell is the director of public relations and marketing at St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Center.  She was previously a senior communications specialist for Lockheed Martin Corporation, a public relations specialist for Blasland, Bouck and Lee, and a news producer for WPTZ-TV 5 and WSTM-TV 3.

Q: What is your favorite course you teach in Newhouse?

A: I really enjoy teaching writing classes.

Q: Do you have any particular interest(s) within public relations?1f459d3

A: I am fascinated by internal communications, and I think it is understudied & undervalued.  I’m energized by crisis communications, as well.

Q: What is your favorite part of working in public relations?

A: No two days are alike.  I need to be constantly challenged, and this is the right field for that to happen.

Q: What motivates you?

A: The feeling that I’ve done something good for someone else or have the ability to do something for someone else – whether meeting a goal at work, making dinner for my family or helping my children.

Q: Did you always want to work in public relations and/or communications?

A: No, I started as a television news producer but PR was always in the back of my mind as an option; I received a minor in public relations from SUNY Geneseo.

Q: How did you know public relations was for you?

A: I have always loved to communicate, from being voted “Most Talkative” in junior high to being the editor of the high school newspaper to “trying” to write a blog today. PR allows me to help others to communicate. And it’s diverse enough to keep an Energizer bunny like me busy!

Q: What has been your proudest moment in your communications career?

A: My proudest moment was when I finished my first semester as an adjunct professor. I realized I had come full circle, from a student to a professional to a teacher of future professionals.

Q: Do you have any fun fact(s) about yourself?

A: I once won a grand piano from Baldwin piano company in an online contest.  My favorite way to spend an evening is “80-year old” style – with feet pajamas, a cup of tea or a glass of wine and my Kindle or word games.

Q: What is/are your favorite quotes(s)?

A: “Carpe Diem.” -Horace

Q: What qualities do you think make a student successful?

A: Conscientious, inquisitive, prompt (to class and with assignments)

Q: What qualities do you think make a person successful?

A: Same as above! But also positivity, ability to work with all types of people and patience.

Q: Do you have a personal message for Newhouse students?

A: This is the time to practice your real-world skills.  Treat each experience like a job and you will get much more out of it.  Now is the time to make mistakes.  As professors and mentors, we can help you.
